Renton: Legacy Square Update

Legacy Square, a visionary urban renewal project, is transforming a former gravel lot at the intersection of S. Third Street and Logan Avenue South into a vibrant, multi-use community hub. This initiative by the City of Renton is more than just a new park; it's a strategic investment designed to spur future development and revitalize the downtown core. By creating a dynamic public space that hosts events, arts, and recreation, the city aims to increase foot traffic and commercial activity, laying the groundwork for further private investment in the surrounding area. The project is being completed in three strategic phases: Phase 1 focuses on foundational elements like landscaping, lighting, and utilities, while Phase 2 and 3 will introduce key attractions like a stage and children's play equipment. This phased approach allows for a staggered but deliberate development that will build momentum and prepare the space for its grand launch in summer 2026, timed to coincide with the FIFA World Cup.

The square's design is intentionally flexible, featuring a futsal court contributed by the Sounders FC RAVE Foundation, a large video screen, and a dedicated stage for performances. These features are not just for recreation; they are catalysts for economic and social development. By providing a permanent venue for cultural events, live entertainment, and sports viewing, Legacy Square becomes a central point of attraction, encouraging residents and visitors to spend time and patronize nearby businesses. The inclusion of designated spaces for food trucks and small businesses further underscores the project's role as an economic incubator, offering low-barrier opportunities for entrepreneurs. This new public space will serve as a magnet, attracting developers and businesses looking to capitalize on the renewed energy and community engagement.

Community involvement is at the heart of the project, ensuring its long-term viability and success. Through a unique public art initiative, local artists and residents are collaborating to create permanent art installations that reflect Renton's unique character. This collaborative process, which invites everyone to contribute, is critical to building a sense of ownership and identity. By making the community a partner in its design, Legacy Square is not merely a city-built project but a co-created legacy, which will foster a deeper connection and pride among residents. The successful activation of this space, managed by a selected event production team, is expected to serve as a model for future public-private partnerships and urban revitalization efforts throughout Renton, demonstrating how public spaces can drive economic growth and community cohesion. The square’s establishment signifies a new era for downtown Renton, positioning it as a desirable destination and a hub for ongoing development and cultural enrichment.
